I agree with the assessment of others that Rostropovich was the top cellist of the second half of the 20th century, and his performance in this video fully supports that claim. I've heard various performances of the Dvorak concerto, all enjoyable, but Rostropovich, in this video, as well as in his CD with Karajan, simply does it better. On top of that, it's the video that makes this recording special. The camera takes you in close and shows you the amazing things that Rostropovich is doing to produce that gorgeous music. I've watched quite a few classical music videos, and this one is unique in revealing a great musician at work.
I have several audio recordings of the Dvorak cello concerto and have been privileged to see it performed (by another) live from the second row, directly in front of the cello. I wanted to relive the memory of the athleticism and artistry of that night with a DVD. I would give 5-stars for the musicianship, even though Mr. Rostropovich probably played it with more energy and tenderness in his recording a couple decades earlier. To the reviewer who dinged this for the breathing of the cellist audible: the playing of this piece requires tremendous effort, which is obvious live or in full shots. Unfortunately, the editing/directing of this version shows little more than very tight shots of the instruments, with rarely even a whole section of the orchestra featured. Better were superimposed images when there were duets, as cello and clarinet, nicely done. I would have asked for some more wide shots, especially when the whole orchestra was playing, but will have to be content with what is available on DVD.
I am not familiar with the other work on the album, but the warmth of Rostropovich's cello and the delicate expression in the opening movement alone of the Saint-Saens will endear that to me on repeated sessions - and lo, there are some actual wide shots!
So grateful to have a video of Rostropovich playing two of the finest cello concertos. Great close-ups of his hands. Breathtaking timing. We will watch it again and again.
A superb DVD record of perhaps the greatest cellist the world has ever seen and heard. Impeccable technique and interpretation. A must for every lover of great music! As a cellist myself, I am in awe of Rostropovich. He makes these great concerti sound so effortless and simple. Truly the mark of a great artist.
The order was prompty and accurately filled and it arrived just three days after being placed. Thanks so very much!
If you have doubts about why so many people thought that Rostropovich was the greatest cellist of the century this dvd will wipe them all away. He is at his peak, his power display is truly amazing!
